Similarity Solutions for Capillary Pinch-Off in Fluids of Differing Viscosity

چکیده
Self-similar profiles associated with capillary instability of a fluid thread of viscosity lh in surrounding fluid of viscosity h are obtained for 1 16 # l # 16 via a simplified numerical scheme. Universal similarity scaling is preserved despite an asymptotically large velocity in the pinching neck driven by nonlocal dynamics. The numerical results agree well with experimental measurements by Cohen et al. [preceding Letter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1147 (1999)]. For all l, the self-similar profile is asymmetric and conical far from the minimum. The steep cone slope increases monotonically with l; the shallow cone slope is maximized around l 14 .

Drop Formation and Breakup of Low Viscosity Elastic Fluids: Effects of Molecular Weight and Concentration
The dynamics of drop formation and pinch-off have been investigated for a series of low viscosity elastic fluids possessing similar shear viscosities, but differing substantially in elastic properties. On initial approach to the pinch region, the viscoelastic fluids all exhibit the same global necking behaviour that is observed for a Newtonian fluid of equivalent shear viscosity. For these low ...
متن کاملFluid pinch-off in superfluid and normal 4He.
We present frames from high-speed videos of the pinch-off of liquid 4He droplets. The temperature of the fluid droplets ranged from 1.33 K to 4.8 K, and the size of the drops was proportional to the temperature-dependent capillary length. We observed no qualitative difference between pinch-off in the normal and superfluid states. In both cases, the shape of the fluid in the final stages of pinc...

1. Introduction: Surface tension driven break-up of cylindrical fluid elements into droplets plays a crucial role in the use or processing of many multicomponent complex fluids like paints, inks, insecticides, cosmetics, food, etc [1, 2]. These industrial fluids are typically formulated using dilute polymer solutions, and are exposed to a wide range of shear and extension rates. Since the polym...
متن کاملDroplet Formation at Microfluidic T-junctions
Analysis of droplet formation in microfluidic systems is important to understand the operation of these devices, and to permit optimal design and process control. Droplet formation in microfluidic Tjunction devices was studied using experimental and numerical methods. The simulations agree well with experimental data from PDMS devices; they show that droplet pinch-off is controlled not by visco...
متن کاملExtensional Relaxation Times of Dilute, Aqueous Polymer Solutions
We show that visualization and analysis of capillary-driven thinning and pinch-off dynamics of the columnar neck in an asymmetric liquid bridge created by dripping-onto-substrate can be used for characterizing the extensional rheology of complex fluids. Using a particular example of dilute, aqueous PEO solutions, we show the measurement of both the extensional relaxation time and extensional vi...
